Sue Seymour, Head of Underwriting & Businesses Processing

I manage the Business Processing and the Underwriting Department. I am the Chief Underwriter and have a background in Underwriting and Claims.

I’m less involved in the day to day underwriting which, I actually really enjoy and more in the planning, strategy and staff development, both for my department and the Society in general. 

What do you like doing?

I enjoy following different varieties of sports, including athletics, cycling, tennis but my love lies with Football. I am a huge Spurs fan, which has got me into a scrape or two, less said the better! 

I live in a small village on the edge of the Cotswolds and love walking my 2 rescue dogs. I really enjoy getting involved and engaging with the community, helping at various activities and events in the village, such as cream teas, quiz nights (ALWAYS come 2nd !) school fetes, village show, Nativity at the farm (i.e. I am a glutton for punishment).

I enjoy travelling within the UK and abroad. Now that our daughters have moved to London we spend a fair bit of time there. I love cooking and love eating out even more, I am also quite partial to pottering around in the garden – when I get a chance!

Karen Smith, Senior Underwriter

My role as Senior Underwriter involves working on the day to day underwriting tasks, in addition to supervising the Underwriting Team.

I am responsible for underwriting applications, dealing with adviser enquiries and ensuring the department runs smoothly.

What do you like doing?

I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two little girls, especially when we go on holiday to our favourite place Saundersfoot in Wales.

When I get time off from the children (which doesn’t happen often!) I enjoy gardening, swimming and watching TV.

 


Steve Hosking, Underwriter 

As an Underwriter, my job entails assessing applications as quickly as possible in order to try and offer the best terms available to the applicant whilst ensuring the Society, and its Members, are not accepting disproportionate risks.

Over my 33 years at the Society, it is hard to come across a condition I haven’t dealt with!

What do you like doing?

I enjoy listening to classical music and keeping fit.

 

 


Emma Spencer, Underwriter 

A typical day will be spent firstly carrying out initial underwriting on new applications, which will involve looking through any disclosures made and deciding if I require any further information. Once the information is received, I will look through any medical evidence such as GP reports and tele-interviews and decide, firstly, if we can offer a contract based on the client’s medical history and, secondly, on what terms should the contract be based.

I will also help financial advisers who have pre-sales queries on aspects of their client’s medical history and give them an indication of the terms that would be likely.

What do you like doing?

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I live on the edge of the countryside so I can often be found walking up a hill or taking my daughter cycling on weekends. I try to keep fit by going to the gym and I have recently started practicing yoga which I love!

I am interested in nutrition and love getting inspiration for trying out new recipes. I am also getting stuck into renovating and decorating my house which has been a lot of fun so far.

Thomas Nowell, Underwriter

I am one of the newest members of the Underwriting Team here at Cirencester Friendly. The main aspect of my job is assessing the applications to see what information we need to underwrite, and making the decisions based on the information we have received. 

I also deal with pre-application enquires and underwriting indications with Financial Advisers.

What do you like doing?

I am really into my reading, and enjoy visiting the library to browse through the different array of books. To organise my collection, I have even built my very own bookshelf!

Sam Njoroge, Underwriter 

I am currently a Trainee Underwriter, learning the ropes with regards to the attributes and skills used by successful underwriters, and how to effectively apply these to new and existing business for the betterment of the Society. I am also studying with CII towards attaining the ACII qualification.

What do you like doing?

I am very much into my music and appreciate learning new songs and techniques on the piano and the guitar. I also enjoy reading and watching TV series such as G.O.T, Criminal Minds, Bones, House and CSIs.
